TECHNICAL TEXTILES > FLAME RETARDANT FABRICS
Although no fabric is fireproof, certain textiles resist fire better than other fabrics.
All fabrics will burn, some are naturally more resistant to fire than others.
Fire-resistant fabric, also known as flame-retardant fabric, is so designated based on the time it takes for the fabric to burn.
Those that are more flammable can have their fire resistance drastically improved by treatment with fire retardant chemicals. Fire-resistant fabric may be naturally fire resistant because of its natural fiber weave, or treated with a fire-resistant chemical to resist heat and flames. When a fabric is designated as inherently fire retardant, permanently fire retardant, or durably fire retardant, the flame retardancy will last for the life of the fabric The flame-resistant properties of inherently flame resistant fabrics, on the other hand, cannot be washed out or worn away, period.
This means the flame-resistant properties of garments made of inherent fibers cannot be compromised. It is crucial for the wearer to know the flame-resistant protection is always there.
